BREWSTER, N.Y. – John Jay went into the holiday break on a high note, scoring decisive wins on Dec. 21 and Dec. 22 over Northeastern Clinton and Beekmantown at Plattsburgh State College.
Fresh off their 11-day layoff, the Indians suited up against Pearl River at the Brewster Ice Arena on Friday, Jan. 3. Though they won the game, 4-1, Coach Alex Miller felt his team lacked crispness early on, as John Jay fell behind after the first period.
“Let’s get back to simple plays and simple passes,” Smith told his players during the intermission.
On senior captain Jack Browne’s slap shot, Doug Styles chased down the rebound and tied the score with 13:45 left in the second. John Jay had a few more chances to score over the next 10 minutes, but they were rebuffed by Pearl River’s goalie, Aiden O'Connor, who made 31 saves in the contest.
“Their goaltender played great,” Smith said.
John Jay broke through again with 2:29 left in the second period, when Browne unleashed a slap shot to the right of O'Connor. The puck was tipped in by senior captain Charlie Oestreicher, giving Indians a 2-1 advantage.
John Jay extended their lead early in the third period when Tyler Wishart calmly put a wrist shot past O'Connor with 13:33 left in the game. Wishart said of his team’s success against Pearl River, “We were faster to the puck.”
Pearl River tried to narrow the lead with a shot that clanged off the post. The rebound sailed wide of John Jay goalie Nick Petrella, who registered 15 saves on the night. Pearl River suffered some late penalties, giving Wishart the opportunity to once more en route to a three-goal victory.
