John Jay’s girls soccer team took a 2-1 halftime lead and defeated host Yorktown 3-1 on Sept. 24.

Charlotte Wilmoth tallied 2 goals for John Jay while Katie LaBriola got John Jay off to the 1-0 lead in the first half.

“Against Yorktown I feel we got sucked into a physical battle of a game rather than focusing on moving the ball,” said John Jay coach Dave Nuttall. “We should have created many more opportunities in that game if we had played smarter.”

The Indians cruised past visiting Brewster 3-0 on Sept. 26 behind two goals from Brynn DiGuglielmo.

“Brynn has been doing excellent with multiple aspects of her game,” Nuttall said. “She is causing problems for defenders with her dribbling, delivering excellent crosses and she is staying composed in front of goal which is helping her score. Her movement and decision making off the ball has also been great.”

Mia DiChiara netted one goal while Kaitlyn Weis notched an assist. Caroline Ettlinger made four saves in net for the shutout.

Saturday, Sept. 28

John Jay rallied from a 3-0 halftime deficit to force overtime, but fell 4-3 to visiting Byram Hills on Sept. 28. The Bobcats scored the decisive goal in the first overtime.

“The key to the comeback was just our work rate and expectations,” Nuttall said. “We know we did not play our best in the first half which put us in a tough situation at halftime. I said to the girls, ‘We put ourselves in this situation and now we have no option but to get out of it.’ And that was the expectation for the second half, to bring the game back. We knew we could play better and create chances and we had to go for it.”

DiGuglielmo was at it again, leading the Indians with two goals. DiChiara also scored.

Blum and Annabel Brennan scored 2 goals each as the Indians got back on track with a 4-1 win over visiting Brewster on Sept. 26.

“We took advantage of our offensive corners and Ella Blum had a beautiful reverse sweep that found the back of the cage,” said John Jay coach Debbi Walsh. “We are starting to connect our passes and have been able to put more pressure on the opposing goalie. We need to continue working on solidifying our defensive presence on the field. However, this win felt really good.”

Melina O’Connor dished out an assist. Ashleigh Brennan made 4 saves.
