PERU, N.Y. – John Jay’s Matthew Ferrer was crowned champion of the 220-pound weight class on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the 51st Peru Wrestling Classic, held at Peru High School in Clinton County, N.Y. The junior wrestler took fifth place at the same tournament last year.

The Indians finished in sixth place out of 14 teams, many of which were based out of Vermont or central or northern New York.

Other strong showings included:

• Junior Max Andrade, second place, 285 pounds
• Eighth-grader Luca Duva, third place, 99 pounds
• Senior Gavin Fiacco, fourth place, 160 pounds
• Senior Ian Gallagher, third place, 182 pounds
• Senior Max Grzymala, fifth place, 152 pounds
• Junior Ben Wiles, fifth place, 285 pounds
