CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. – Senior Gavin Fiacco, runner-up a year ago, won the 160-pound Section 1 title with a hard-fought decision victory over New Rochelle’s Steven Burrell on Sunday, Feb. 16, at Clarkstown South.

Fiacco, who improved to 34-6, came out aggressively but the match remained a stalemate after the first minute. Burrell scored first, going up 2-0, countering Fiacco’s forward movements with a takedown. But two takedowns and an escape for Fiacco gave him a 5-2 lead after the first period.

The John Jay senior carried his momentum into the second and third periods, building his lead to 8-2 after another escape and takedown. Burrell answered back with 2 points, but Fiacco controlled the rest of the way, holding on for an 11-4 win over the sophomore from New Rochelle.
