]]>KENILWORTH, NJ - The sixth issue of David Brearley High School's newspaper, The Bear Print was recently published. DBMHS student Brianna Yadimarco wrote the following article regarding the annual Senior Trip.
Senior Trip
The decision has been made! Pocono Valley Resort is the destination for the senior trip!
This beat the runner-up choice, Hershey Park. Pocono Valley Resort is located in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, roughly 1 hour and 35 minutes away from David Brearley High School. The senior trip is on June 3rd, and the full excursion will last from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM that same day. It’s $100 to be able to go, and that payment is due May 1st.
At the Pocono Valley Resort, there are enough activities to choose from so all the seniors can keep themselves busy! There will likely be other
schools enjoying the resort at the same time as the seniors.
With all the activities available, there are water and non-water sports. For the water aspects of the Poconos, there is Lake Akiba where kayaks and pedal boats are available, as well as two Olympic-sized heated pools on the upper and lower levels. For land activities, there are a variety of courts and fields including a basketball court, a tennis court, a pickleball court, a mini-golf range, a soccer field, and more. Apart from those, there are air activities involving zip lines, a rope course, and a treetop course.
Restrooms are located inside and just outside of the dining halls. Food will be provided, specifically roasting marshmallows together at the end
of the night. Since they are heading to the mountains in June, they should prepare to dress lightly.

]]>KENILWORTH, N.J. – On Saturday, May 18, the Kenilworth Historical Society will host an “Afternoon Tea With a ‘Weird N.J.’ Twist” at the Kenilworth Veterans Center located at 33 South 21st Street in the Kennedy Room beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Participants will explore the unique, mysterious and peculiar side of New Jersey through an enlightening presentation by Mark Moran and Mark Sceurman, founders and publishers of the acclaimed Weird N.J. semi-annual magazine.
In addition to the featured program highlighting little-known N.J. legends, folklore, ghost sightings and other fascinating stories, the event will include a gift auction, 50/50 raffle and door prizes. Assorted teas, tea sandwiches and desserts will be served. Admission is $30 and advance reservations are required (by May 1 recommended), as seating is limited.
For reservations/tickets, please call 908-709-0434 or visit Love You More floral boutique at 13 North 20th Street, Kenilworth, where tickets are being sold.
During the Afternoon Tea, Moran and Sceurman will speak of people, places and happenings in New Jersey that are not found on most tourist maps or historical records, as the primary focus of their backroad travels and research is on local unwritten history and modern folklore considered to be strange, odd or unique.
Proceeds from the Afternoon Tea will benefit the Kenilworth Historical Society’s Oswald J. Nitschke House (c. 1880) “living history” museum and cultural arts center by helping defray operating expenses, including the cost of an elevator that makes all levels of the site (“living history” museum, exhibition center and cultural arts center) fully accessible to everyone.
Moran and Sceurman began their search of unwritten New Jersey history and modern folklore more than 30 years ago in the course of compiling a homespun newsletter, called “Weird N.J.,” that they distributed annually to their friends. The pamphlet, comprising odd news, bizarre facts, little-known historical anecdotes and anomalous encounters from across the Garden State, was based on the idea that “every town in the state had a least one good tale to tell.”
Soon thereafter, “Weird N.J.” evolved into the popular self-published magazine Weird N.J.: Your Travel Guide to New Jersey’s Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets. At that time, “the two Marks,” as they familiarly are referred to, started conducting their own investigations into local legends, ancient mysteries, bizarre beasts, ghosts, unexplained phenomena and fabled people and places throughout New Jersey.
In 2003, Barnes & Noble released the first Weird N.J. hardcover book, authored by Moran and Sceurman under their own imprint. Additional books followed in a nationally successful Weird U.S. series, also produced by “the two Marks.” A number of Weird N.J. publications will be available for sale during the Kenilworth Historical Society’s May 18 “Afternoon Tea With a ‘Weird N.J.’ Twist.”
In 2005, Weird U.S. became a weekly television series, starring Moran and Sceurman, on the History Channel. “The two Marks” are currently commentators on the program Paranormal Caught on Camera, which airs weekly on the Travel Channel and on Discovery +.
The Kenilworth Historical Society (www.kenilworthhistoricalsociety.org) is an independent, volunteer-based, non-profit, tax-exempt, 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the research, preservation and interpretation of the Oswald J. Nitschke House (c. 1880), local history and culture.

KENILWORTH, NJ - The fifth issue of Harding Elementary School's newspaper, Let's HAWK About It! was recently published. Harding pupil Danna Vasquez wrote the following article about Vice Principal Mrs. Carrara.
Mrs. Carrara’s Interview
This month I had the opportunity to interview Mrs. Carrara, our vice principal, and here is what I learned. Mrs. Carrara spent the holidays traveling to Tennessee and visiting the college her daughter will attend in the fall, Milligan University. She stated, “Tennessee is beautiful in the winter, with lots of snowy mountains and holiday lights.” Mrs. Carrara looks forward to all the great things to celebrate at Harding during February. She added, “There is so much to celebrate in February; Ground Hog’s Day, Black History Month, Valentine's Day, and the 100th Day of School! It’s hard to pick a favorite. I also love to watch the Super Bowl!”
Mrs. Carrara added that she spent her Valentine’s Day visiting a lot of classrooms to join in the Valentine’s celebrations! She thinks the most exciting part about being the vice principal this time of year is beginning to plan for the next year! “This is the time of year when we start to think about schedules, new classes, and programs, as well as welcoming new students in the fall.”
A final note, on President's Day Weekend, Mrs. Carrara spent time at home working on some spring cleaning. “Now if spring would just arrive,” Mrs. Carrara added.
Thank you, Mrs. Carrara, for answering my questions!

]]>Happy Saint Patrick's Day! Whether you plan to celebrate or not, here are some fun facts to expand your knowledge.
March 17 is not St. Patrick's birthday; it's the day he died.
He was born in 385 AD on an unknown date. After spending most of his adult life converting the pagans of Ireland to Christianity, St. Patrick died on March 17, 461 AD.
On this festive day most likely you will hear "Erin go Bragh." But what does it mean? It's a corruption of the Irish Éirinn go Brách, which means roughly "Ireland Forever."
St. Patrick was not born in Ireland.
His parents were Roman citizens living in England. At the age of 16, he was kidnaped by Irish raiders who took him away and sold him as a slave. He spent several years in Ireland herding sheep and learning about the people there. At the age of 22, he escaped and made his way to a monastery in England. He returned to Ireland and converted the people to Christianity.
Saint Patrick's Day is the biggest day for bars in the country.
174%: Increase in beer sales on St. Patrick’s Day compared to the rest of the year (153% more spirits are sold compared with the average day).
Patrick's color is blue.
The original color associated with St. Patrick was blue, not green. Early artworks depicted St. Patrick was wearing blue vestments.
$1.84 Million: Market value of a leprechaun’s pot of gold.
New York's St. Patrick's Day Parade pre-dates the country's founding
The New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade is the country’s oldest and largest parade. The Irish tradition began 14 years before the Declaration of Independence on March 17, 1762.
Your odds of finding a four-leaf clover are about 1 in 10,000.
No alcohol was served on St. Patrick's Day in Ireland until 1970.
For many decades, St. Patrick's Day was a religious observance in Ireland during which all pubs were closed. In 1970, St. Patrick's Day was reclassified as a national holiday, thus allowing the taps to flow freely.
Corned beef and cabbage is not an Irish meal.
It is an Irish-American meal. In the late 1800s, many Irish in America were poor immigrants and could not afford to eat meat very often. They bought the least expensive cut of meat – brisket – which they would soak in a brine to make tender, and the least expensive vegetable – cabbage.
The first St. Patrick’s Day parade was in the United States, not Ireland.
According to the legend, wearing green makes a person invisible to leprechauns, so they can’t pinch you.
Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

KENILWORTH, NJ - The fifth issue of Harding Elementary School's newspaper Let's HAWK About It! was recently published. Harding pupil Lauren Cruz wrote the following article about Principal Ronald Bubnowski.
Mr. Bubnowski’s Interview
I fortunately got the chance to talk with Harding’s Principal, Mr. Bubnowski! We had the chance to talk about the fun that goes on at Harding School in February! Firstly, he started with what he did for Valentine’s Day, and he stated, “Valentine’s Day was fun! At school, it was nice to see everyone wearing their festive red and pink outfits. Outside of school, I went to IHOP with my family and had pancakes for dinner…delicious fun!”
Mr.B is also starting a tradition of his own this year in celebration of President’s Day. He wants to read the biography of one of our presidents every year. If he starts this tradition now, perhaps he will get through all 46 of them!!
As we continued the conversation, he mentioned that he thought the Groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil wasn’t going to see his shadow, and an early Spring was coming. Mr. B was right!!!
In addition, Mr. B explained that he had lots of fun during the long President’s Day weekend. His family went skiing together like they usually do. Lastly, he says, “He’s excited to see what 2024 brings and that this year is going great so far at Harding.” Thanks, Mr.B!
