KENILWORTH, NJ – The junior class of David Brearley High School will host their annual “It’s Gravy! Not Sauce!” Pasta Dinner on Friday.
This will be the sixth annual dinner for the class, who started the fundraiser in sixth grade. The funds raised from the dinner go to the individual accounts of the students who work as either waiters/waitresses, kitchen help or cleanup help.
“We want the kids to work and earn,” chairperson Darlene Candarella said. “It helps them really appreciate the people who come.”
This year, most students will put their earnings towards a senior trip to Universal Studios. The students must work for a minimum of four hours, and the ones who do will split the proceeds of the night to be put towards senior activities, including the trip and prom.
“We’re hoping we get a nice turnout,” Candarella said. “We think more students will volunteer now that they know what their senior trip is.”
The fundraiser is assisted by donations from local bakeries, pizzerias, diners and stores. Donations include bread, butter, pasta, utensils and the ingredients needed to make tomato sauce. Candarella’s husband, a trained chef, leads students in the kitchen.
“Without donations, we wouldn’t be able to keep the price we have,” Candarella said. “We’ve charged the same amount for tickets every year. We want the kids to make the most out of it.”
The event will be held at the Kenilworth VFW from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or by calling Candarella at 908-447-9421.
Candarella advises that people call soon, as the fundraiser also buses in seniors and feeds the veterans who are in the VFW. All unopened products at the end of the night will be donated to the veterans or the pantry at St. Theresa’s Church.
“It all comes together,” Candarella said. “So we hope we get a good turnout this year.”
