MONTCLAIR, NJ - More than 1100 employees of the Montclair School District didn't receive their direct deposit pay on Tuesday. Before the end of the day, the school district had remedied the error, but then a new problem emerged. The very next day, some Montclair School staff then received a second direct deposit in their accounts, giving them double pay.

This comes on the heels of Montclair school district staff not receiving their current pay rates and instead receiving 2017-2018 pay rates.

Interim Montclair Schools Chief Nathan Parker acknowledged the error on Tuesday and told the community that the district would immediately remedy the matter.

He wrote, "Through an unfortunate error in the Business Office, all Montclair staff members did not receive their pay this morning." Parker further stated that the matter had been remedied by the afternoon. 

"As of mid-afternoon, all direct deposits were restored. This event furthered a growing level of distrust due to a previous error in salaries for certain staff earlier this year."

Tuesday afternoon, the Montclair Education Association president Petal Robertson and dozens of staff, rallied outside of the board of education offices located at 22 Valley Rd to blast the district for the error and to also demand the 2019-20 pay rates that they haven't yet received. 

Robinson stated that nearly 1100 employees were affected by this error. She also stated that staff members were owed raises that they have yet to receive.

Montclair's business administrator, Emilio D'Andrea also sent an email sent to staff early on Wednesday to inform them that they "are working to fix the problem."

In a letter to families, Parker wrote the following:

"I want to inform the Montclair community of an issue that occurred today that affected all Montclair Public School District staff members. I hope to reassure this community and gain your trust. Through an unfortunate error in the Business Office, all Montclair staff members did not receive their pay this morning. As of mid-afternoon, all direct deposits were restored. This event furthered a growing level of distrust due to a previous error in salaries for certain staff earlier this year.

District-wide culture and climate should be a priority for any school district leader as it is paramount for me. Understandably, mistakes like these have a negative impact on the way we feel about where we work. It is important for our staff members to be able to rely on their employer.

I want to acknowledge that this error occurred and apologize for this situation as well as commend the Montclair staff members for their resilience. It is unacceptable that oversights have led to these mistakes and all involved will be held accountable. It is through accountability and my increased involvement that I will diligently put systems in place to prevent errors.

I apologize for any frustration and stress this placed on our staff and their families.
