Union County College Names New Governors to the Board

Union County College President Margaret M. McMenamin, Ms. Hairston, Mr. Hirschfield, Mr. Haveson, and Union County Board of Trustees Chairman Victor M. Richel.

At the May 23 Union County College Joint Meeting of the Board of Trustees and Board of Governors, Alan M. Haveson of Watchung, Harvey R. Hirschfield of Far Hills, and Susan D. Hairston of Summit, were sworn in to serve as new Governors. All three have previously served as Trustees to the Union County College Foundation, are donors to student scholarships, and embrace the College’s mission of, “Transforming our community…one student at a time.”

Board of Trustees Chairman Victor M. Richel welcomed the three new members saying they will, “bring new energy and perspective to the College’s Board of Governors.”

Mr. Haveson is a very successful business man who began his career at the family owned company, Eastern Bearing, which was a distributor of automotive ball/roller bearings in Elizabeth, NJ. The company became an authorized distributor for many leading bearing manufacturers. In 1978, Mr. Haveson purchased the company and it grew into three operating divisions, with seven branch locations in three states and more than 100 employees. Eastern Bearing became the largest independent bearing and power transmission products distributor in the New Jersey/New York/Eastern Pennsylvania metropolitan area. In 1999, the company was sold to Motion Industries, Inc., a division of Genuine Parts Company.

In 1997, Mr. Haveson purchased the assets of three dollhouse and miniature retailers from which he built the store Little Treasures in Westfield, NJ. He closed the company in 2006. However, in 2004 he purchased Lee Controls, Inc., which is a manufacturers of precision linear shafting and related precision linear motion bearing and component products. It is located in Piscataway, NJ. Lee Controls grew nationally and internationally and Mr. Haveson sold the company in 2013.

Mr. Haveson is also involved in many philanthropic endeavors. He serves as a Trustee at Temple Emanu-el in Westfield, NJ; he is President of the Power Transmission Distributors Association; he is a member of the Planning Board for Watchung, NJ; he is a board member and Past President of the Stonegate Townhome Association in Watchung, NJ; he is a past board member of the Middlesex County Workforce Investment Board; and he is the current President of the New Jersey Technology and Manufacturing Association.

Mr. Harvey Hirschfield brings more than 40 years of experience in financial services, banking, and specialty finance. He is the President of Plaintiff Funding Holding Inc. (LawCash); the co-founder of Esquire Bank NY; Chairman of the American Legal Finance Association; and a member of the Board of Directors of Oritani Savings Bank.

Previously, Mr. Hirschfield served as Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and a Director of HealthShield Capital Corporation and a Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and Director of Franklin Credit Management Corporation, a publicly traded company specializing in real estate mortgage and portfolio acquisitions.

Mr. Hirschfield is a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University. Earlier this year, Mr. Hirschfield established a scholarship with the Union County College Foundation.

Ms. Susan D. Hairston brings to the Board her expertise in global foundation grant making operations and program services from her many years of service at the Ford Foundation in New York, NY. Ms. Hairston served as the Director of the Office of Program Operations and Services for more than four years at the Foundation, but has worked for the foundation for more than 19 years. She served as the spokesperson for external presentations on program and grant making operations. As Director, she motived an organization of 200 people with seven direct reports.

In addition to her professional experience, Ms. Hairston is a member of the Union County College Foundation and has contributed to scholarships for Union students. She has also served on the advisory board for The Center for Effective Philanthropy. Ms. Hairston is a graduate of the University of Pittsburg and holds an MPA from Seton Hall University. In addition, she is an Ascent Fellow of the Tuck Executive Education at Dartmouth University.
