ELIZABETH, NJ - The New Jersey Department of Health is continuing to investigate the cause of the passing of Daniela Genaro who attended Nicholas LaCorte - Peterstown School No. 3 after it was confirmed that the student had been diagnosed with influenza. Officials say, it "presently remains unclear whether or not the virus was the primary contributing factor to the child's passing."

In a second letter today by Superintendent of Schools Olga Hugelmeyer issued an update to parents stating:

All Elizabeth schools are open and clean. You should feel comfortable in sending your child to school tomorrow. All schools have been sanitized each day since the Fall with a Neutral Disinfectant DS-1 which is effective in removing all pathogens. In addition, all buses are being sanitized as well. We took additional steps in sanitizing Nicholas LaCorte – Peterstown School No. 3 today. We continue to be in communication with the Elizabeth Health Department which is working towards scheduling additional health clinics to provide the flu vaccine. Additional details will be provided as soon as possible.

Grief counseling will be available for students and team members to assist them in the grieving process on Tuesday, Feb. 20 starting at 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. In addition, the school has scheduled a meeting with parents.

It is urged by officials that if your child is showing any signs of the flu, you should see a medical professional. If a child has a fever, he or she should remain home.
