KENILWORTH, NJ – Chris Kelley and Ava Figueiredo have been named this week’s David Brearley High School Athletes of the Week.
Chris Kelley plays on the varsity basketball team at David Brearley High School. He has been playing basketball he says his entire life and “it’s way more than a sport to me.” One of his favorite sports memories was when “I made a put back buzzer beater to put my team and I into overtime. We went on to win that game making the memory even better.” His coach Pat Dunnigan praised Kelly for his work. “He was an integral part of winning record last week as we went 2-1 and won a huge game at home against Roselle on Friday, January 31. Chris had 15 points in a win over Koinonia on Wednesday, January 29, and 10 points in a win over Roselle Friday." When Kelly is not playing basketball, his hobbies include hanging out with friends and family and listening to music.
Ava Figueiredo is a junior and began competition cheerleading when she was just seven years old. She started out with different cheer programs until she was a freshman at David Brearley and tried out for the cheer team. Since then she has done fall and winter competition every year. Her best sports memory was going to Maryland for Nationals. “Not only do we get to perform in a huge arena, but we get to make memories that we’ll never forget when doing team bonding activities down there.” At Brearley Figueiredo is the class president of 2021, a peer advisor, and a member of the National Honor Society. When she is not taking part in school activities, Figueiredo loves to spend time with her family and friends.
