KENILWORTH, NJ – Alexander Velasco and Brianna Gallagher have been named this week’s David Brearley High School Athletes of the Week.
Alexander Velasco is a 17-year-old senior at David Brearley High School. Velasco started participating track his sophomore year because he wanted to get in shape and take better care of his body. This is his last winter track season which he is sad about, but he says he is having a lot of fun. The best sports memory Velasco speaks of was at a county meet in Westfield. “It was the final lap of the 1600-meter race (1 mile), and I was 200 meters from finishing. I was so tired that people began to pass me, so I was losing my spot in first. I wanted to win in my heat so bad that around 125 meters left I began to sprint as if I were being hunted by a bear! I ended up passing six people and came first in my heat. My team was so proud and coach were so happy. It’s a memory I won’t forget.” Velasco’s other hobbies include Latin dancing, reading books and comic books, and learning about music.
Brianna Gallagher is a senior and has been a cheerleader at David Brearley since the beginning of her freshman year. She enjoys cheering on the Brearley sports teams, as well as being a member of the competitive cheerleading squad. As a senior Gallagher was selected as one of the cheer captains and loves the opportunity. She states it allows her to share what she has learned over the past four years with her younger teammates. Gallagher is also a member of the senior class’ executive board, a peer advisor, and a peer leader at DBHS. When she is not taking part in school activities, she works at a local carwash and spends as much time as possible with her friends and family, especially her little brother Christian. When asked about her best sports memory she says she can’t help but smile when thinking about the trips she and her teammates took for competitions and the friendships she will always cherish. As Gallagher starts to prepare to graduate, she is excited to begin her college career and hopes that she will be able to continue to cheer.
