KENILWORTH, NJ – Joseph Gasper, 17, from Boy Scout Troop 83, recently built a large shed at DiMario Park for the Recreation Center as part of his Eagle Scout Project. To celebrate his achievement, an unveiling of the shed was held August 1 at DiMario Park.  At the ribbon cutting ceremony Gasper was joined by Pat and Kristin Boyle, Mayor Anthony DeLuca and Council, his father Troop 83 Scout Master, and his mother and brother. Several members of the Boy Scouts and the town were also in attendance to support Gasper’s success.

Gasper has been a scout since the first grade and his current rank is Life Scout which is just below an Eagle Scout.  To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, Gasper had to complete a project. An Eagle Scout Project involves the scout making a development in the community while demonstrating his leadership skills.

Growing up in Kenilworth Gasper has watched the Recreation Center grow immensely. The Recreation Center uses DiMario Park as the main location for summer camp activities, numerous sports games, and other town activities. What Gasper thought would be really beneficial to the Recreation Department and the community was more storage space for all of the equipment. The project took about five months to complete along with organizing fundraisers to reach his goal. The total cost to complete the shed was around $3,500. Gasper stated, “without the help of Jeager lumber we would have not been able to complete the project in its entirety based on our dreams of the shed.”

When asked about the most memorable part of the project Gasper says, “working with my father and brother, without them this project would have been a mess. I also enjoyed working hard with them and after having lunch with my mother in our trucks. My favorite days of the sheds build was doing the roof and pouring the concrete pad.”

Gasper would also like to thank: his mother, father, brother, and family, all past Eagle Scouts of Troop 83, his friends, the mayor and council, Recreation Center, Jaeger Lumber, Kenilworth Veterans Center, Kenilworth Veterans of Foreign Wars post 2230, Dr. Forman, Kenilworth Diner, Kenilworth Rotary Club, Kenilworth Library, Greco Roma and many more.

Future plans are undecided for Gasper but he affirms, “I would like to be involved with the scouts forever and carry the rank of Eagle with respect and honor.”
