KENILWORTH, NJ – The Brearley Bears Girls Varsity Soccer Team defeated the Summit Hilltoppers 5-4 in penalty kicks in the second round of the Union County Tournament. The girls delivered a strong performance and the game remained tied through regulation and double over time, eventually making its way to penalties. This win reflects the immense success that the team has had so far this season. Their current record is now 10-1-1.
Scoring penalties for the Bears was Sofia Lospinoso, Amber Fernandes, Catherine Goger, Michelle Montoya, and Emma Bestider. Lospinoso saved the first penalty from Summit and won the game for the team with the fifth penalty.
“These girls played hard for ever single 120 of those minutes” head coach Michelle Ventura beamed. “Along with our tremendous defense, Sofia Lospinoso made some remarkable saves. Summit made us work hard, but Sofia’s penalty save and out penalty goals are what ultimately brought us to get the win we needed to advance. It’s been many years since Brearley has made it this far. At this moment I couldn’t be prouder of my girls.”
Their next challenge is when the team and head coach prepare for a much anticipated matchup in the quarterfinals Saturday, October 12, against Westfield. The time is still to be determined. Stay tuned for the latest updates.
