CRANFORD - Linden Fire Department joined Fire Departments from multiple Union County Townships as they responded to a mid-afternoon house fire on Brookdale Place in Cranford. 

At approximately 3:01 p.m. on Thursday, the Cranford Police Department received a radio transmission, broadcasted from the Union County Police Department, reporting a house fire.

Upon arrival authorities discovered a single-family residential structure in flames. The body of a deceased female, later identified as Deborah Meehan, 65, was discovered at the scene by firefighters on the first floor.

The cause of death was initially unknown and the body was transferred to the Union County Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy is being performed.

The cause of the fire has been deemed accidental and through a preliminary investigation is believed to have started on the first floor of the home.

An ongoing investigation by the Union County Fire Investigation Task Force will continue.
