Reynolds-Jackson Statement on Art All Night Shooting

TRENTON, NJ – Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson (D-Mercer, Hunterdon), whose districts include the Capital City of Trenton, released the following statement Monday regarding the Art All Night Festival shooting on June 17:

“I, like countless others, was saddened, angered and hurt by the shootings and injuries at Art All Night. I extend my condolences to the family of the individual killed and wish a speedy recovery to those injured.

“For the past 12 years, Art All Night has been a first-class arts festival celebrating the rich artistic and cultural diversity of our beloved Capital City of Trenton.  Artists from near and far, of all ages, skill levels and mediums, submit their work (with no required submission fee) to this annual free event that is a ‘must attend’ for thousands. While the shooting was unfortunate, we have to continue this dynamic artistic gathering.

“As the legislative representative for Trenton, I am committed to working toward solutions that will allow programs such as Art All Night to thrive.  These solutions include fighting negative stigmas about Trenton by improving the quality of life for its residents; increasing educational resources for students; and creating additional job training programs to help decrease the city’s double digit unemployment rate.

“The shooting at Art All Night is yet another reminder that gun violence is prevalent throughout our country, and that the causes are complex. Regardless of why such violence occurs, our communities, elected officials, community-based organizations, families—all of us--must work together to find a reasonable solution.

“Let’s focus on the issues and create opportunities for a better life in Trenton and all communities around the country.”
