CLARK, NJ - A little over a year ago, fourth and fifth grade students at Saint John the Apostle School began a program entitled ‘Know Atom,’ an inquiry-based hands-on science program.  Since that time school officials said both classes have shown significant improvement in their science achievement on nationally-normed assessments.

In recent testing, fifty percent of the fourth grade class scored above the 80th national percentile compared to thirty-eight percent a year ago.   The fifth-grade program produced similar results with an increase from 35 to 45 percent of the SJA class performing above the 89th national percentile. In addition, 94 percent of this class scored above the national average.

The new science program was made possible by a grant from the Merck Pharmaceutical company.  The program is designed to improve science education and meet the expectations of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
