SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA - The ALJ Travelers are spending spring break in Costa Rica.  23 students and four chaperones are off for a ten day high adventure trip led by Arthur L. Johnson High School teacher Fredy Reyes and assisted by Jamie Wronski and Nicholas Reyes.

After multiple flights and a long day of traveling the group arrived in San Jose, settled in and eventually bunkered in for a night’s rest in anticipation of a big day of exploration according to Reyes.

The first full day brought the ALJ Travelers on a tour of the Britt coffee plantation and later to the Arenal volcano.  “My favorite part was the hike to the Arenal Volcano and the views of the lake," said junior Ashley Russell.

In the days following, the group has kayaked, enjoyed an afternoon in the area hot springs, zip lined over a rain forest, hiked to La Fortuna waterfall and “took a dip in a very very cold swimming hole,” said Reyes.   The travelers have also gone on a night hike where they spotted sloths, tarantulas, vipers and various native birds.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
