NEWARK, N.J. – Rapper Juelz Santana, a resident of Totowa, faces weapon charges after allegedly trying to get a loaded firearm through security at Newark Liberty International Airport, according to U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito.

The rapper, whose real name is LaRon L. James, 36, surrendered to police this morning. He has been charged with  one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and one count of carrying a weapon on an aircraft. James was scheduled to appear in federal court in Newark this afternoon.

A Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent identified a suspected firearm during the screening and contacted the Port Authority Police. James left the checkpoint area without his belongings, Carpenito said upon seeing that his bag had attracted attention, He left behind his driver’s license and boarding pass, and allegedly left the airport in a taxi.

Police revealed that James’s bag contained a Derringer .38 caliber handgun that was loaded with two rounds. James was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a 2013 conviction for manufacturing and distributing a controlled dangerous substance, Carpenito said.

If convicted, James faces a potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison.
