SPRINGFIELD, NJ - As many as 50,000 residences lost power Friday morning across New Jersey.due to weather related issues and salt corroding equipment.

Volatile temperatures were one of the weather related problems.  Temperatures reached into the 60’s after a period of subfreezing weather earlier in the week. Windy conditions also played a role.  A fire at a substation at Newark airport caused some evacuation and delays. Many schools had delayed openings or early dismissal. Menlo Park Mall, one of New Jersey’s largest, had to close for the day.

An industry expert believed that the outages were caused by a dense fog experienced during the morning.   They said "This can cause “arching” which negatively affects lower voltage sub stations. The transformer fire at the airport was probably caused by salty water seeping into the transformer area. This malfunction was most likely due to equipment age and fatigue."

One other point made was “As long as you have overhead lines you’ll have periodic issues. You can’t bury all the lines. It is cost prohibitive.”

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
