LINDEN, NJ- Joseph E. Soehl Middle School in Linden has converted its Little Free Libraries into miniature food pantries during the current health crisis.

With the coronavirus raising concerns about the safety of using the little free libraries’ books and the difficulty families are experiences during the pandemic, pantries have given the school community a way to give back.

“These are such uncertain times right now, and I wanted to find a way that our school can help,” said Soehl Principal Isabella Scocozza. “It is becoming increasingly difficult to purchase food, and many residents are uncomfortable frequenting stores during this time. The Little Free Pantries are a great way to provide non-perishable food and goods to our Linden community.”

The Little Free Libraries, located on the Elm Street and Henry street sides of the building, have been at the school since last year.  The school is asking the public to participate in the effort so that it can keep its little pantry fully stocked with non-perishables at all times.

“Residents are encouraged to take what they need or to give what they have to our Little Free Pantries at Soehl Middle School,” she said. “The Little Free Libraries have been and will continue to be such a wonderful addition to our school and community.”

Little Free Libraries

Little Free Libraries are leave-a-book take-a-book library exchanges free for the community. The purpose of the libraries is to bring back a spark and excitement for reading amongst children, especially during a very technological age society has recently become. The refreshing idea that there are no rules involved, there are no late fines and if you love a book you can keep it, should encourage children and even adults to read more.
