LINDEN, NJ - Linden's Sixth Ward Councilman John Francis Roman came up with an idea that he could use his social media to raise money for the nurses in Union County.

With Nurse Appreciation Week May 6 to May 12 and his hair continuing to grow longer due to lack of access to local barbershops during the COVID-19 pandemic, Roman came up with a brilliant plan to honor nurses throughout the county.

“They are the ones who are keeping so many people alive during this time,” Roman stated with confidence and pride. “At the end of the day, I wanted to do this because I wanted to give back to all the nurses that gave me the extra time with my father this past year before he passed away on February 2. Without their care, he would have passed away in November. They work hard, deal with stress that all of us staying at home can’t even imagine, and they deserve our respect and our support.”

The fundraiser is extremely important and dear to the Councilman’s heart.

“I’ve been wanting to do something nice for the nurses in the area and I clearly need a haircut, so I came up with this idea to kill two birds with one stone,” said Roman.

Initially, Roman worked to raise $2,000 for the nurses with the promise to shave his full head of hair on Facebook Live. After surpassing that goal, Roman decided to cut off his full beard if he raises over $2,500. With the help of donors, Roman has raised over $6,000 in under 8 days.

“I never thought it would be this successful. I am excited for tonight and for all the good this money will do.” Roman shared with TAPinto Linden.

Roman encourages everyone who comes in contact with his post to, “please open your hearts and donate, this is a once in a lifetime event.” He will continue to collect donations until 7:00 p.m. and then will go live and “buzz all of his hair off.”

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards an annual scholarship to Union County College’s for Trinitas Nursing School, intensive care units throughout Union County, and a certified nursing assistant (CNA) from Union County.

Those who donate are invited to submit nominees and the donors will be the ones selecting the CNA to receive the donation.
