LINDEN, NJ - Linden Department of Parks & Recreation is offering four classes for senior citizens. Each session is two hours long. Each session is a stand-alone and participants can sign up for one or all. All sessions will be held at the John T. Gregorio Center, 330 Helen St. and are free. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Accidental US Presidents: Eight Presidents died in office. This course will examine the circumstances around their deaths (Four were assassinated), their historical significance and the fate of their successors. Our discussions will also include how Presidential Succession is provided for in the US Constitution and how succession has changed through Constitution Amendments and changes in the law. The assassinated Presidents were Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield. William McKinley & John Kennedy. Other Presidents who died in office were William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Warren Harding and Franklin Roosevelt. The class will be held Friday, April 17, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the John T. Gregorio Center, 330 Helen St. The fee free. 100th Anniversary of Women’s Right to Vote: The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted American women the right to vote, a right known as women's suffrage, and was ratified on August 18, 1920, ending almost a century of protest. This course will review the Women’s Suffrage movement that led to this change to our Constituent with special emphasis on woman from Union County. Items commemorating 19th Amendment will be distributed to participants. The class will be held Friday, April 24, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the John T. Gregorio Center, 330 Helen St. The fee free. Impeaching A President: Our country recently went through its third impeachment and trial of a President. Why did the Founding Fathers include an impeachment provision in the US Constitution? What kind of behavior were they concerned about? How did the impeachment of President Trump differ from the impeachment of Presidents Andrew Johnson & Bill Clinton and the near impeachment of Richard Nixon? The class will be held Friday, May 1, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the John T. Gregorio Center, 330 Helen St. The fee free. The Electoral College System of Electing a US President: The Constitutional creation of the Electoral College System for electing our President is unusual, confusing and some say, undemocratic. How did the Founding Fathers come up with this process and Why? How is it affecting the modern election of Presidents? Can or should we try to change it and how could it be changed? The class will be held Friday, May 15, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the John T. Gregorio Center, 330 Helen St. The fee free.
