LINDEN, NJ - A special needs man was killed when a fire broke out on the 1400 block of McCandless Street on Monday.
The victim, identified as 26-year-old Cyril "Chewy" Spinks, was located by Linden Fire Department personnel and later pronounced deceased.
According to authorities, the fire began shortly after 8:00 p.m. in an apartment on the second floor. Arriving police and fire units reported the second floor of the building was fully engulfed with heavy smoke and visible flames.
Firefighters from Linden, Elizabeth, Rahway, Roselle Park, and Garwood battled the two-alarm blaze for about 45 minutes before it was extinguished.
A business located on the first floor sustained smoke and water damage.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, it is not considered suspicious at this time.
