LINDEN, NJ – Through the remainder of August, Faith in Action’s LIVE FREE campaign will host Peacemaker Sabbaths at houses of worship all over the country.
LIVE FREE will encourage clergy and lay leaders to consider their roles as peacemakers in a violent world and host at least one Sabbath during the month of August to bring attention and answers to the gun violence epidemic and how communities can tackle white supremacy. The Sabbath events come just after a string of three tragic massacres in less than a week, all involving gun violence to carry out a mass killing, with several rooted in white supremacist hatred.
According to a press release, LIVE FREE wants those affected by both urban gun violence and these acts of terrorism to know that there are proven strategies to significantly reduce gun violence in some of the our most dangerous neighborhoods.
At each Peacemaker Sabbath, the hosts will Preach, Pray and Act with and for those affected by gun violence, using their pulpit to move their congregations to take action by calling on members of congress to pass H.R.8 – a comprehensive background checks bill – and taking time to learn more about the root causes of gun violence.
The goal of the events are for Faith in Action’s LIVE FREE Campaign to join together with houses of worship across the country. More specifically, those in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Washington and Wisconsin.
The New Jersey locations include:
- Greater Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Linden
- Nafshenu, Cherry Hill
- Union County Interfaith Coordinating Council - Religious Services, Elizabeth
LIVE FREE is a national grassroots movement of people of faith to organize in local communities to end mass incarceration, reduce rates of gun violence, and to combat police brutality, issues that disproportionately impact our brothers and sisters of color so that all communities may be able to live in freedom.
Faith in Action National Network is the largest grassroots, faith-based organizing network in the United States. Faith in Action works with 1,000 religious congregations in more than 200 cities and towns through its 45 local and state federations. Faith in Action and its federations are non-partisan and do not endorse or support candidates for office. Faith in Action urges people of faith to consult their faith traditions for guidance on specific policies and legislation.
