ELIZABETH, NJ -  Linden High School senior Tavon Jones scored 40 points and recorded his 1,500th career point as the Tigers (ranked No. 11 on NJ.com’s Top 20) rolled past their cross-town rival, the Elizabeth High School Minutemen by a final score of 70-32 Thursday night in Elizabeth. He also hit six three-pointers for his team.

Jones previously achieved 1,000 career points 11 months ago, when Linden defeated Bloomfield in the NJSIAA Group 4 State Semifinals on Thursday, March 9, 2017.

Linden took full control instantly, jumping out to a 21-3 lead over Elizabeth after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Tigers outscored the Minutemen 20-9, taking a 41-12 lead into halftime.

The Tigers began to take a major grip on the game, outscoring their opponent 19-8 in the third quarter, building a 60-20 through three-quarters of play.

Also in the win, Linden senior Mikey Watkins added 14 points, while senior Jaylin Cooper-Reid added six points for the Tigers.

Earlier on Thursday, the Linden Tigers were placed as the third seed in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 state tournament bracket. They will take on 14-seeded J.P. Stevens High School (Edison) on Tuesday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m.

The Linden Tigers (15-5) will take on North Bergen HS Saturday afternoon at Kean University, a part of the Metro Classic at 5:00 p.m.
