LIVINGSTON, NJ — As part of Livingston-based accounting firm Sobel & Co.’s annual Day of Community Service on Monday, more than 100 staff members and partners assisted the Community Food Bank of NJ at the firm’s Hillside facility.

The day was preceded by three months of intense fundraising events that were led by four summer interns: Sam Abbaticola, Charlie Grotyohann, Joe Hunt and Nikki Wong. The interns collectively developed a variety of novel ideas, ranging from a pie-throwing contest (with the partners as “targets”) to Taco Tuesdays to a chili cook-off.

Each one of these events, along with raffle tickets and other traditional ideas, enabled Sobel & Co. to build momentum internally and generate the funds needed to exceed the goal set for raising enough money for 21,000 meals for the Community Food Bank.

Every dollar contributed by Sobel & Co. went toward providing three meals or $8 worth of food and grocery products, which means that the $11,054.24 the firm raised can be converted into thousands of meals and food or grocery items.

“Sobel & Co. has a set of core values that is embraced across the firm from the most senior professionals to our youngest staff,” said Alan Sobel, managing partner. “We are confident that it is our genuine belief in these standards that has enabled us to build a culture of caring. We care about each other, we care about our clients, and we care passionately about our community.”

According to Sobel, spending the day together sorting and repacking groceries to ready them for distribution across the state gave everyone a sense of commitment, pride and accomplishment. The 120,400 total volunteer hours spent at the Community Food Bank each year demonstrate the powerful volunteer role that Sobel & Co. plays within the community.

“The day flew by for us all—and when it was over, we were pleased with the results, but also a little shocked to hear how much we had actually accomplished by sorting and repacking all of those groceries,” said Sam Abbaticola, accounting intern at Sobel & Co.

On behalf of Sobel, Molly Lockwood, human resource director, added that she was proud of the interns’ efforts and the impact they have had on the firm.

“Each year, we include taking responsibility for our Day of Community Service as one of the most important tasks assigned to our interns as we continuously find new ways to nurture their professional and personal growth,” she said. “To succeed at this philanthropic initiative, they have to be organized, communicate clearly, set and attain goals and be innovative—and then they have to inspire the Sobel & Co. employees and encourage their full participation.”

Sobel & Co., Certified Public Accountants and Advisors, was built on core values that speak to the staff’s commitment to each other, to clients and to the community. Under the guidance of Alan Sobel, the firm has continues to grow and flourish, enjoying its status as a leading regional firm in the community.
