LONG VALLEY, NJ - Summer is in full bloom and summer camps are coming to a close. While many people are planning end-of–summer trips, one other thing to consider is visiting camps while they are full of campers, counselors and activities to get a hands-on feel for them. Of course, camps hold open houses throughout the year, and one can peruse their websites, but seeing a camp in full swing offers a point of view that may be helpful when making 2015 summer camp decisions.

According to Roz Buck, owner and director of Meadowbrook Country Day Camp in Long Valley, “Now is the best time to begin thinking about your children’s plans for next summer. If you are considering day camp options for the summer of 2015, visiting camp now, while it is in full session where you can see the Meadowbrook fun and excitement ‘in action’ is a great way to do your camp research. Meeting the owners and directors of the camp, seeing/feeling the spirit, and watching the positive interaction between campers and staff is the best way to know if a camp is the right fit for your family.”

Her partner and husband Jed Buck said, “Meadowbrook’s goal is to create the best possible camp environment in which children can thrive. Meadowbrook is a place where children have the opportunity to try new activities, take on new challenges, increase their self-esteem and grow in a safe, nurturing, fun environment. This is accomplished through a dynamic and creative program organized by a warm and caring professional staff.”

“This is my girls’ fifth year at Meadowbrook,” said Debbie ‘Mack’ Glucksman, a 1986 LHS graduate who is one of two staff photographers at camp. “They have made amazing friends that they see outside of camp. They love mountain boarding, archery, bumper boats, chocolate [an edible art activity], cooking and arts and crafts—just to name a few of their favorite activities. They also love the staff and feel like part of the Meadowbrook family. In addition, my older daughter loves it so much that she is a counselor this summer.”

Each week of the summer there is a different theme at Meadowbrook. There are exciting Special Events, Carnivals, Shows and Unique Activities associated with each weekly theme, and the themes change each and every year.

Throughout the days, many typical camp activities take place too, such as: Swim Instruction based on the Red Cross Skill Levels and Free Swim in a 9,000-square-foot pool complex with three heated pools, Archery, Tennis, Basketball, Softball, Soccer, Cooking, Dance, Lacrosse, Flag Football, Nature, Fishing, Newcomb, Challenge Courses, Canoeing, Kayaking, Paddle Boats and Bumper Boats on a private lake, Gymnastics, various Arts & Crafts, and Hockey.  There are also some unusual activities like Mountain Bikes, Mountain  Boards, Ultimate Frisbee, Tapu-aie, GaGa, Handball, Speedball, Chocolate, Arcade, Bonfire Cooking, Earth Wind & Fire, Rocketry and more.

In addition, Meadowbrook serves kid-friendly and healthy lunches every day and offers snacks and water throughout the day. The 50-acre wooded facility and tented areas offer plenty of shade to keep campers cool during the hot summer days. Meadowbrook also provides door-to-door transportation on air-conditioned mini-buses to Morris County and parts of Essex (including Livingston and West Orange), Union, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Somerset counties. And, one thing that is unique to Meadowbrook is that all tips are included in tuition so there are no extra costs later on.

Letter to the Editor: Don't Complain. Vote!

April 12, 2018

Don’t Complain; Vote!

It’s no secret that people have strong feelings about what’s happening in our country. It’s also true that much of politics is local. In November, 11th District residents will have the opportunity to choose a new congressional representative who will not only serve as a critical check on the federal level, but also determine how our distract fares ...

Cluelessly Clueless

I teenaged my way through high school under the assumption that my parents had no idea what I was doing.  I like to think I was pretty good at withholding information and presenting situations in ways that were other than they really were.

Still, sometimes they found things out.  Like the time my friends plopped me on our front door step at one o'clock in the morning ...
