MAPLEWOOD, NJ — More than 100 local scouts participating, more than twice the number from previous years, volunteers from packs in West Orange, Livingston, West Caldwell, Verona, East Orange, Maplewood, Montclair, Short Hills, Millburn and Newark recently collaborated on the annual CubMobile Derby in Maplewood.
In the CubMobile Derby, Scouts use gravity to race down the hill at Memorial Park in Maplewood. The race cars, designed and built by scouts with guidance from their den leaders, are soapbox-derby style.
West Orange Cub Scout Pack 107 was among the packs to brave the heat to participate, introducing its own CubMobile into the races for the first time. Although the derby is considered to be non-competitive, according to participants, Pack 107’s car, “The Fireball,” did well.
The family-oriented event to end the summer gave scouts the opportunity to have fun while learning good sportsmanship and the rules of fair play.
