FAIRFIELD, NJ — In the week leading up to the third annual Brendan Tevlin Lacrosse Festival in West Orange on July 30, Thatcher McGhee's Irish Pub of Fairfield is hosting a three-day-long “Dine & Donate” event from Monday, July 18 through Wednesday, July 20, in honor of the Livingston resident who lost his life at age 19 to a shooting in 2014.

On Wednesday, July 20, the bar will also host a special "Bar Night for Brendan," with entertainment by Matt Suyat, an American Idol Top 24 finalist, and Kyle Hill of “The Band Suyat.” Flyers must be used for takeout, dine-in and the bar in order for 20 percent of the guest’s bill to be donated to the Brendan Tevlin Lacrosse Festival.

“These two events bring family, friends and strangers all together—some have met Brendan and others only knew his story but want to come support,” said Michael Condon, event coordinator and a cousin of the Tevlins. “Keeping the memory of Brendan alive helps all of us heal from losing such an amazing person. Brendan was the life of the party—we all know Brendan would love each of these events and would have had the time of his life.”

Flyers will be accepted anytime during business hours: 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. Emailed flyers will also be accepted by presenting the pdf version on any smartphone.

Moneys raised will cover the cost of food, refreshments, T-shirts and more for the festival and will help to keep the annual tribute alive for Tevlin, a Seton Hall Prep graduate, and his family.

“Besides having an amazing night full of great music, great company and good vibes and easy living, people will be honoring Brendan Tevlin,” said Condon. “For those who did not know Brendan, he was an All-American kid. He was epitome of the ideal son, brother, friend, student, and citizen. He radiated positivity everywhere he went while spreading his message of ‘good vibes & easy living.’”

In his college essay, Tevlin wrote, "If the world were to stop spinning at this very moment, could you honestly say you are satisfied with what you have accomplished in your life? I couldn't. How could I? I haven't traveled the world, swam with sharks, or gone skydiving; but, most importantly, I haven't made a difference in the world. I haven't made the difference that I know I personally can make."

“Like his sister Michaela said: Brendan was wrong,” said Condon. “His message of ‘good vibes & easy living’ and his life story have been changing lives and inspiring people all over the country and world.”

Bar night for Brendan begins Wednesday at 7 p.m., with The Band Suyat taking the stage at 8 p.m. Surprise guest bartenders for this year’s event have not yet been determined.

“The final night is what we’re most excited for,” said Condon. “[The Band Suyat] is generous enough to be playing this event free of charge and have played at other events for Brendan Tevlin.”

During the lacrosse festival on July 30, there will also be a tricky tray and silent auction. Bigger ticket items will not be announced until the week prior to the festival, but last year’s prizes included a Bud Light fridge; Yankees, Mets, Giants, and Jets Tickets; a Cornell Lacrosse Jersey; and Florida State Football Jersey.

“We are very thankful for many Livingston businesses that have been generous enough to send donations and gift cards,” said Condon. “Special thanks Pizzetta, Anthony Franco's, Livingston Bagel, and Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza. Other places such as Ricalton’s Village Tavern of South Orange and Sorrento’s Bakery of East Hanover have donated gift cards as well.”

Many supporters have already donated jewelry, gift baskets, gift cards, coolers, and bicycles for the tricky tray event. People can also donate to the “Brendan Patrick Tevlin ’13 Memorial Fund ATTN: Lacrosse Festival at Seton Hall Prep.”

Coordinators will continue to accept donations of any sort up until the event. Those interested can email goodvibeseasyliving@gmail.com or call Michael Condon at (973) 886-8187 to donate.

Would Shedding

How much wood wouldn’t a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck woodn’t?

Enough already.

I get it.  It is an easy mistake to make, misusing would and wouldn’t.  It happens to me all the time.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
