WEST ORANGE, NJ – Barnabas Health has announced that John F. Bonamo, MD, MS, FACOG, FACPE, has been named Chief Medical Officer of Barnabas Health and will begin his new role effective Jan. 1, 2015.

Ostrowsky. “His vast experience and knowledge of current directions in medicine will serve Barnabas Health well into the future.”
Barnabas Health Executive Vice President of Operations Thomas A. Biga, will serve as Interim President and Chief Executive Officer of Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC), while a national search is conducted for a candidate.
Dr. Bonamo, a physician executive with a distinguished clinical background in Obstetrics and Gynecology, has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of SBMC, since 2001. Earlier this year, Dr. Bonamo assumed the responsibility of Barnabas Health Quality Officer, leading the Quality Council and Quality Forum, and steering the advancement of system quality and safety programs.
He joined the SBMC Medical Staff in 1981, upon earning his Medical Degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and completing an internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at SBMC. For the next 18 years, he maintained a busy private practice and was a highly-respected obstetrician and gynecologist. He is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1997, he received the National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education.
During his tenure as an attending physician, Dr. Bonamo was a medical staff leader and participated on numerous committees including serving as President-elect of the Medical Staff, President of the Saint Barnabas MetroWest Independent Physicians Association, President of the Saint Barnabas Physician Partnership, and Clinical Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 2000, he left private practice to serve as the Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs at SBMC.
In addition, Dr. Bonamo received his Master of Science in Health Care Management from the Harvard School of Public Health, where he is currently an adjunct lecturer in the Health Policy and Management Department. Since 2006, Dr. Bonamo has been a faculty member of the Beijing University International Management Program, teaching in both the United States and the People’s Republic of China.
While a practicing physician, Dr. Bonamo was active in numerous societies in his field. He is currently a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, of the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and is a member of the New Jersey Obstetrical and Gynecological Society.
