Educators from The Children’s Institute to Present at NJECC Conference

LIVINGSTON/VERONA, NJ – Seven educators  from The Children’s Institute (TCI), a state-approved, non-profit, private school for students with autism and related disabilities, located in Livingston (high school and adult 18-21 program) and Verona (pre-school—middle school), are scheduled to offer five of the 13 special education presentations at the upcoming 28th Annual NJ Educational Computing Cooperative Conference (NJECC) , a conference which includes leadership, special education and library strands.

The conference, which is co-sponsored by the NJ Department of Education and Montclair State University, is scheduled for March 11-13 at Montclair State University in Montclair. Post-conference workshops will be offered March 12 and 13. Registration for the NJECC Conference can be made in advance or on site. For information, visit

All of the TCI sessions, which are one hour long and targeted for special education teachers in New Jersey, will be offered on Tuesday, March 11.

Executive Director/Superintendent, TCI, Bruce Ettinger said that he is pleased that so many of TCI’s talented staff will share their expertise on students with special learning needs at the NJECC conference to enhance skills and provide powerful learning tools to educate students.

TCI Teacher David DiIanni will lead a presentation on, “Working with Autism, Careers and Social Skills through Media Creation.” DiIanni runs the film/media program at TCI High School and also offers the TCI Film School, after-school and Saturday programs for children on the spectrum with an interest in film and media.

Reading specialist teachers at TCI, Kate Honig and Noelle DiGiacomo, will offer a program and make a presentation on, “Literacy Instruction in Special Education-Integrating Technology with the iPad.” TCI teachers use many apps on the iPad to help students excel in reading and language arts.

In addition, TCI Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) Megan Maquire and Valerie Triano will talk about the use of, “Video Model Segments as a Behavioral Intervention and Teaching Strategy,” another popular learning tool at TCI.

And, TCI Health and Physical Education Teacher Bogdan Protas will lead a discussion on, “Using Interactive White Boards in Health Education,” during his session at the conference.

Finally, Computer Specialist and Technology expert Randall Palmer will also lead a session on, “Increasing Independence for Students with Special Needs.” Mr. Palmer is also coordinator of the Special Education strand at the conference and a member of the group’s advisory board.

The keynote speaker for the conference will be New Milford High School Principal Eric Sheninger who will speak about “Leadership by Example: Change for Now and the Future.”
