EDISON, NJ – Over the last week, Central New Jersey has experienced cooler mornings and brisk evenings. With winter looming just around the corner, the experts at Edison Heating and Cooling recommend having home and business furnace and boiler units checked and/or replaced before the cold is here to stay.
“Winter will be here before you know it and you don't want to be in the position where your system breaks down,” said Mike Iarrapino, owner of Edison Heating and Cooling. “Make your appointment for an inspection now to ensure there are no problems as we get further into the winter months.”
Noting that "efficiency is key," Iarrapino added that systems that are more than 15 years old should be replaced before the cold weather hits. According to Iarrapino, “now is a good time to buy," as current promotions along with thousands of dollars in potential state and manufacturer rebates and incentives are currently available and listed on the company’s website.
For those with fairly new units, Iarrapino states that regular maintenance is essential when it comes to making units last longer and run more efficiently.
“A system that is not running properly will have reduced capacity and use more energy,” said Iarrapino. “Routine maintenance will, in the end, cost less and prolong the life of your equipment.
At Edison Heating and Cooling, service technicians are available to conduct a 21-point tune up on residential and commercial heating systems. During an in-home visit, a tech will check all safety devices, electrical connections, humidifiers (if applicable) and more.
For hot air systems that includes cleaning the flame sensor, lubricating motors, checking air flow, etc. and for those with hydraulic (boiler) systems, technicians will also check backflow preventers, water feeders, circular pumps, and chimney drafts.
“The chimney is critical," said Iarrapino. "If you don't have a good draft in your chimney, carbon monoxide could be coming back into your house. Our technicians will check that the flue passages are clear, that no leaves or sticks are stuck, and that there is a good draft. That is so important.”
To ensure safety, Iarrapino also suggests installing battery-operated or electrical carbon monoxide detectors in all living spaces and near bedrooms.
“A carbon monoxide detector is critical as we go into the heating season,” he said. “Carbon monoxide is a silent killer and if your unit is over 20 years old it could be a ticking time bomb.”
When it comes to getting ting the most of a heating and cooling system, Iarrapino recommends changing all filters every other month.
“Doing this will ensure efficiency and longevity,” he said.
