MILLBURN, NJ — Girls on the Run of New Jersey East’s registration for the spring season is now open. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that inspires girls in 3rd through 8th grade to be joyful, healthy, and confident. The volunteer-led program brings together groups of 8-15 girls for a ten-week program that encourages character development, social and emotional learning, and service to the community.
Girls on the Run will be offered at the Livingston Oval on Tuesdays and Fridays, 3:45-5PM, beginning on April 2. Girls may also participate at GOTR program sites in neighboring towns, where the program is offered on different days and times.
“Running has been a large part of my personal life for the last 40+ years and it feels great to give back to both the sport and young girls in our area,” said Livingston coach Randi Cohen. “I hope that through their participation in Girls on the Run that they, too, can develop a healthy lifestyle for their future along with important tools of empowerment along the way. It has been so much fun to learn along with the girls. Their energy, enthusiasm and excitement brightened every day that I spent with them.”
“It's amazing to work on a large goal, step by step, and to witness their feelings of accomplishment when they cross the finish line of a 5K. It is something they never thought they would accomplish and teaches them that with a goal and hard work, they they can do anything! That is an extremely important life lesson and achievable thanks to Girls on the Run.”
Girls on the Run New Jersey East has inspired girls throughout Essex, Morris, Union, Burlington, and Mercer Counties since 2000 and has impacted the lives of more than 10,000 girls. This season, Girls on the Run will be offered at more than 80 school and park-based locations. Each team will meet two times a week for 75 minutes either before or after school and participate in research-based lessons that use dynamic discussions and fun running games to teach life skills. The season will culminate at the Florham Park Jaycees 5K on June 8, which brings together family, friends ,and community members to celebrate the girls’ growth throughout the season.
Girls on the Run New Jersey East is generously supported by presenting sponsor R. Seelaus & Company, Inc., a Summit, NJ-based financial services firm. The program fee for the fall season is $199, and financial assistance is available based on a sliding scale.
