Girls Soccer: Livingston beats Montclair, 2-0

LIVINGSTON, NJ - On Wednesday, Oct. 2, the top-rated and previously undefeated Montclair Mounties girls soccer team came to the Livingston turf to battle the Lancers. Although Montclair had only allowed one goal in its 10 victories this season, they faced a determined Livingston squad who had clearly circled this game on their calendar.

Montclair started the game very aggressively forcing most of the play to the Livingston side. They had their chances on goal but were unable to capitalize. After weathering the early storm, the Lancers mounted their own attack.

When the final whistle blew, the Lancers had a 2-0 victory moving their overall record to 6-2-1 and evening their season series with the Mounties.Goalkeeper Mykala Healy had six saves to notch the shut out.

Erica Dippold provided all of the offense that Livingston would need scoring two goals in the first half. Both goals were assisted by Jordy Bonvini. Dippold was particularly pleased with the results saying that “it felt amazing because Montclair has always been our biggest rival”

The defense took over for both teams in the second half and the play became significantly more physical.   The Lancers had to hold onto the lead without Casey Garfinkel who left the game in the second half with a wrist injury.

When asked who should receive the game ball, Livingston coach Paul Raiz said,”There would be too many game balls to give. I think it was a team effort. Eleven girls on the field, substitutes, bench players, goalie, defense, everyone. Twenty game balls.”

Dippold said that she would give the game ball to “Jordy (Bonvini) because without her, I would never had scored those balls.”

Livingston travels to Glen Ridge on Monday Oct. 7 for another tough matchup with the 6-3 Ridgers.   Game time is 4 p.m.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
