LIVINGSTON, NJ — Although the COVID-19 pandemic prevented the Township of Livingston from holding its regular “Livingston Remembers” ceremony to commemorate the events of Sept. 11, 2001, the township still held a private event at the 9/11 Living Memorial Garden last week and livestreamed it for public viewing.

“Normally this area would be filled with residents, police officers, firefighters, first aid members, auxiliary police officers, other first responders, veterans, all here to honor those killed on 911, and we would all be here rain or shine,” said Mayor Rudy Fernandez. “Unfortunately, this year is different…Notwithstanding these current circumstances, it's still important and necessary for us to come together as a community and remember those who were killed.”

Those who spoke during the ceremony acknowledged the seven Livingston residents killed in the attacks and also honored all the victims, heroes and others affected by the events of Sept. 11, 2001. A special tribute to the seven victims from Livingston can be found HERE.

“Nineteen years ago, in the face of this tragedy, Livingston came together—neighbors helping neighbors, reconnecting with each other and helping each other heal—but it continues today to strengthen that spirit of community,” said Fernandez. “Some communities have stopped having ceremonies honoring those affected by the events of September 11th, but not Livingston.

“Because of our commitment to continuing our ceremony of remembrance, we have been recognized by the 9/11 Commission as a community that continues to recognize the tragedy of that September morning 19 years ago, and we have the honor of having been given a flag that was flown at Ground Zero at the 10th anniversary commemoration and which is on display at Town Hall.  It is because of all of you who come together year after year to show your respect to the families affected by 9/11 that we received a special honor in recognition.”
