WEST ORANGE, NJ — Austin Vecchio scored two goals and Zachary Turbin was stellar in goal as Livingston's ice hockey team defeated Verona-Glen Ridge, 3-1, in the first round of the McInnis Cup tournament Friday night at Codey Arena.

Verona-Glen Ridge had two separate power play opportunities in the opening period, but Livingston killed off both penalties and the period ended in a scoreless deadlock.

Vecchio gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead on an even-strength goal withh 7:32 left in the second period with an assist from Dillon Schultz. Livingston then had to kill off another penalty late in the second period.

Verona nearly tied the game early in the third period when Will Benson took a shot on a shorthanded breakaway, only to have Turbin make a spectacular save to preserve Livingston's one-goal lead. Verona killed off that Livingston power play, but the Lancers took a 2-0 lead when Danny Grossbard ripped in a shot from the high slot after a steal by Dillon Schultz and an assist by Lenny Kanchik.

The Hillbillies scored their only goal with 10:28 left when Zach Gold lit the red light with helpers from Jack Lonsinger and Evan Twitchell to cut the Livingston lead to 2-1.

Verona nearly tied it, 2-2, when a shot hit the post with 1:45 left in the third period. But, soon after, the Hillbillies were forced to pull their goalie, and Vecchio scored into the empty net with just under a minute left to give Livingston its insurance goal.

Turbin made 29 saves out of 30 shots against him. Keith Juros of VGR made 24 saves out of 26 shots against him.
