Jews in Classical Music, February 26th

By ANDREW MILLER, TEMPLE EMANU-EL

August 24, 2010 at 11:58 AM

Temple Emanu-El of West Essex in Livingston, will present a four-session course, "Jews in Classical Music" beginning on Thursday, February 26 at 8 p.m.

Led by Cantor Sharon Brown-Levy, fans of classical music will enjoy learning the influence of Jews in the genres of Opera, Oratorio, and Art Song. Featured study selections include: Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman to Mendelssohn's Elijah, Handel's Creation, Bizet's Carmen, and Halevy's La Juive. Join the Cantor in exploring the exquisite beauty of this music. Listen to sound samples, recorded and live; learn about the composers and artists who made them great, and get immersed in the beauty of this rich Jewish musical heritage.

Cantor Brown-Levy studied classical voice and Spanish Education at the University of South Florida. She holds three summa laude degrees in these fields. Upon graduation, she was chosen to study voice as an apprentice artist at the International Institute of Vocal Arts in Chiari, Italy. For the next eight years, Brown-Levy balanced cantorial work with a career on the professional stage. She has performed leading roles in the genres of opera, solo orchestral, operetta, zarzuela (Spanish operetta), Broadway musicals, and big bands. She has also taught voice at Eckerd College and the University of Tampa. In the spring of 2005, she completed her certification requirements, with distinction, for both the Cantors Assembly (Conservative) and the American Conference of Cantors (Reform), earning her the titles of Hazzan or Cantor.

The other three class dates are: March 5, March 26, and April 2. There is a fee for the course.

For further information and to register, contact the Temple office at (973) 992-5560.

Temple Emanu-El is located at 264 W. Northfield Road in Livingston.
