NORTH CALDWELL, NJ - On Thursday, the West Essex High School boys’ varsity basketball team defeated rival Newark Academy at home, 68-60. 

Though it started out as a close game after the first quarter, with West Essex ahead by just two points, 17-15, West Essex continued to lead in all quarters, ultimately taking the game, 68-60.

Jon Agolia lead the way for the Knights with 24 points and five rebounds. Gary Lombardi also had a strong game, finishing with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Gebereal Bailey had 26 points and three 3-pointers for Newark Academy.

The win for West Essex marks a turnaround from the previous meeting of the two Essex County squads on Jan. 6, where Newark Academy won, 61-46.

The Knights are now 13-4 on the season and the Minutemen at 10-5.

Newark Academy next plays Millburn at home on Feb. 7, at 1:00 p.m.

West Essex next plays at North 13th Street Tech on Feb. 9, at 4:00 p.m.
