“When the holidays end, people will be taking down the decorations from their trees,” said a Livingston township official. “They will be packing away the ornaments, but what will they do with the trees? If it’s a ‘live’ cut tree, they can recycle it. Simply leave cut trees at the curb, just as like recycling and Public Works will remove and recycle the trees.”

The Township Christmas tree collection/recycling program will end January 31, 2014. Christmas trees will be collected from Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Last year, the DPW collected and recycled over 1,000 Christmas trees.

“The Christmas tree collection program saves the cost of garbage disposal, since the Township is charged by weight to remove bulk items,” said the Livingston township official.

In addition, the Township, in conjunction with the Department of Public Works, has added another environmentally-friendly program—employees of the Department of Public Works will be chipping the trees into mulch and making it available to residents for pick-up, at no cost. The mulch created from the trees may be used in flower beds and garden borders.
