Livingston Boys Soccer Team Edges MKA, 3-2

LIVINGSTON, NJ – The Livingston Lancers boys’ soccer team opened the 2013 season with a hard-fought victory over Montclair-Kimberley Academy, 3-2, at home on Wednesday afternoon.

Livingston began the game controlling the time of possession and was able to keep the ball on their offensive half of the field. Just four minutes into the game, outstanding Lancer Freshman, Ben Neyer, was able to find the back of the net through traffic. Despite the Lancers completely out-working their opponent in the first half, the MKA Cougars failed to convert on a few chances near the goal, sailing many shots over the crossbar. Livingston was able to hold the 1-0 lead for the rest of the first half.

MKA tried to make adjustments in between halves to get their offense going, but their strategy proved to be no match for Livingston’s hustle on the field. The Lancers picked up where they left off in the first half, and were able to control the game. The second half was highlighted by goals from Neyer, and sophomore, Jack Wasserman. MKA also connected on two goals in the second half; however, they couldn’t quite mount a comeback after going down, 3-2, late in the game.

Lancer sophomore goalkeeper, Garrett Meinhardt, was a vital piece to preventing a comeback from MKA. In the later stages of the game, the Cougars finally showed some urgency on the offensive end. Meinhardt managed to make many diving stops and communicated well to his defenders. When asked about his team’s stellar performance today, Meinhardt had to say this:

“I thought the whole team played well today and I held down the net pretty nicely out there. We really worked hard and were able to out-work MKA to get the win. I was expecting us to come out firing, and that’s what we did.”

Livinvgston head coach Roger Rubinetti described the victory as “relieving.”

“We’ve been working hard since August 19. We didn’t have a strong year last year, but I’m very happy that the kids managed to get the win. Last year, we lost a lot of games by one goal, so it’s good to see that we are capable of winning close games,” Rubinetti said.

Livingston will hit the road to face their next opponent, Glen Ridge, on Monday, Sept. 16.
