LIVINGSTON, NJ— At the recommendation of township police, fire and first aid officials, the Livingston Township Council decided on Monday that Edgemere Road will remain open to allow better access for emergency equipment.
Nearly two years ago, the council debated whether to close off the road at its intersection with Scotland Drive after some residents of the area, part of the development known as Hillside Heights, supported closure as a means of maintaining the development as what some called an “enclave.”
The street has remained open and the public safety officials have been asked to weigh in on the effect of this status on emergency vehicle access.
Due to the controversial nature of the topic, the governing body, at the urging of councilman Ed Meinhardt, agreed at its council meeting Monday to have personal letters sent to residents of the area explaining the township’s position.
