LIVINGSTON, NJ — The Livingston Fire Department responded to a fire at Celeste Jewelers on South Livingston Ave. on Saturday morning, temporarily shutting down South Livingston in both directions while the fire department operated at the scene.
The Livingston Police Department assisted with traffic control and members of the Livingston First Aid Squad were on standby at the scene in case needed by the firefighters.
“This morning's fire at Celeste Jewelers originally came in as an automatic fire alarm,” said Livingston Fire Chief Christopher Mullin. “Upon arrival, it was discovered there was a fire in the ceiling and smoke in the store.”
Mullin said a general alarm was transmitted and arriving fire crews extinguished the fire in the ceiling, containing the damage to the ceiling above the showroom floor. The second floor was checked for fire extension, which was negative, and the building was ventilated using smoke ejector fans.
"All firefighters worked in a quick and efficient manner and achieved a quick knock down with minimal damage to the structure,” said Mullin. “It was a good job by all involved."
