LIVINGSTON, NJ — The Livingston girls volleyball team, seeded third for the Essex County Tournament, advanced with a 2-0 victory over Cedar Grove in the first round on Saturday.
"Some of our notable highlights throughout the season would be: improving this year’s conference play record significantly from last season, and raising over $1700 for the Sideout Foundation on our DIG PINK night," said Livingston girls volleyball coach Dan Kim, whose team is 12-11.
Last season, Livingston finished with a 7-13 record.
"We hope that we could advance in the county tournament further than we did last year," Kim said. "Another goal is to make it back into the NJSIAA State Tournament, and improve on previous years' finishes."
Some of this year's front-line performers so far have included Mackenzie Lee, Joey Li, Onome Okopie, Norah Shaji, Ruta Gomez, Shea Farestad and Jess Hirschmann, but the Lancers' coach was hesitant to single out any individual performers.
"We’ve adopted more of a whole team philosophy, and therefore do not really bring names into the conversation," Kim said. "Our players do have numerous conference and county accolades, but I prefer not to celebrate that until finalized."
The county quarterfinals were scheduled for Oct. 22 at Livingston against Newark Academy. Livingston will host both semifinals on Oct. 25, and the final is scheduled to be at Mount St. Dominic on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The Livingston girls volleyball team also includes Phoebe Abeles, Zoe Ching, Sarah Cullen, Alyssa Falchetta, Simona Falkovsky, Carolina Lopez, Ada Ojukwu, Nikita Shaji, Katrina Shomakiya, Jenna Ly and Christine Kim.
