Garage sales are a great opportunity to unclutter the house or empty the garage, and sell unwanted items to those looking for a bargain. It’s a great way to make some extra cash in a tight economy, but they can also be a nuisance to neighbors with cars blocking driveways, and signs left out long after sales have been completed.

In response to numerous resident complaints about ongoing sales, the Township Council has adopted a new garage sale ordinance to help minimize disturbances to neighbors.

The new garage sale ordinance will require registration of the sale with the Livingston Building Department at no cost to the resident. The ordinance includes any type of sale including garage sale, attic sale, rummage sale, house sale, yard sale, estate sale, tag sale, flea market sale or any similar casual sale of tangible personal property.

Garage sales will be permitted for no more than three consecutive days and no more than two times in a twelve-month period. The hours of garages sales will be between 8 am – 5 pm only, and notices can be posted up to 24 hours prior to the sale. However, notices must be removed upon completion of the sale; otherwise fines of $25 will be imposed for each sign left up. Residents are reminded that it is prohibited to post any type of signage on utility poles. 

This ordinance will be enforced by the Livingston Police Department on the weekends and by the Livingston Zoning office during the week.
