Livingston Lancers Hockey Team Beats Montclair, 5-1

LIVINGSTON, NJ - Returning to the ice at Richard J. Codey Arena, the Livingston Lancers used the momentum from a stellar weekend performance against West Orange to topple the Montclair Mounties, 5-1, on Monday. The team dominated Montclair last year—and in true Lancer-fashion, Livingston replicated the same outcome again.

The first period was primarily a defensive battle. Phil Edelman of the Lancers took five shots in the first minutes of the game, only to be denied by the strong Mountie defense. However, junior Josh Delseni capitalized on captain Cole Friedfertig’s rebounded shot to end the first stanza with a Livingston one-goal lead.

Delseni scored once more in the second period, assisted by Edelman and Tal Finberg. Freshman Ronan Tattersall added another tally to the Lancers’ score with a goal assisted by Ryan Dallow and Joe Lilien. Friedfertig led the defensive charge and managed to hold Montclair scoreless.

The third period opened up with two goals from Finberg, including a snipe from the blue line that hit the upper corner of the goal. Montclair managed to score in the final minutes of the game to prevent a shutout by Lancer goaltender Brian Lilien, however, when the final buzzer sounded, Livingston remained convincingly victorious.

“There’s always room to improve,” said Friedfertig. “We need to make sure our passes are tape-to-tape and work on making our offense and defense more efficient. But, we did a great job taking away scoring chances from such a complex Montclair offense.”

This win, however, should not come as a surprise to opposing teams. Starting in net, Brian Lilien has proven why he was named one of’s “Goaltenders to Watch.” His save percentage and his ability to stop the puck from shots in close is impeccable. Sophomores Edelman and Tattersal have stepped up tremendously, filling the spots of the multiple seniors that graduated last year. The two are fearless on the ice and are not afraid to take shots on net.

On Wed., Dec. 18, Livingston will play West Essex, the team that has given Montclair their only victory this season, at Richard J. Codey Arena. The Lancers will look to improve to 4-1-1.
