LIVINGSTON, NJ - A January white sale isn’t just for retailers any more—Friends of the Livingston Library (FOTLL) is holding its own “January White Sale,” from Thur., January 23 to Mon., January 27. Further information is available online here and here  and at the Library (Friends of the Livingston Library), 10 Robert Harp Drive, Livingston, 973-992-4600 x505.

Board spokeswoman Teresa Allard said, “Building on the success of our Black Friday Sale last November, Friends is taking another page from the retailer’s handbook and holding its own version of a ‘January White Sale.’

One Friends’ source puts the origin of a January White Sale back to the late 19th century when Wanamaker’s department store held a ‘white sale,'  which then referred to towels, bed sheets, pillowcases and the like that were typically white in color.

“Our white sale is the printed page,” said Allard.

FOTLL expects to have over 1,000 books available for sale. In addition, during the clearance sale, stock will not be replenished; so, FOTLL Board Secretary Sue Cone is encouraging patrons to come early to get the best selection.

On Tues., January 28, Friends volunteers will be removing all remaining old stock and replacing it with new inventory. Cone noted that on that day, prices will return to the library’s everyday low price list. In addition, following the full restock, Friends will continue its policy of replenishing the ongoing book shelves twice a week and doing a complete re-stock every 4-6 weeks. The next BIG Friends sale will be on Saturday, May 31-Sunday, June 1, when Friends will again take over the Library’s Program Room to offer light summer reading and children’s games, in what Friends calls, “Beach Books and Poolside Prose.”

Sale prices will be as follows:

  • $0.25 for all adult hard cover and soft cover fiction books
  • $0.50 for adult hard cover and soft cover nonfiction books
  • $0.25 for all children's and young adult books
  • $2.00 for DVDs
  • $0.25 for other non-print media
  • $0.10 for a selection of dime books.

The sale will run during regular library hours and will work on the “honor system” where patrons select their books and pay at the cash box.

The books sold by FOTLL come primarily through donations. Donations of gently used books (no textbooks, magazines, or encyclopedias please), board games, electronic games, puzzles, audio books on CD, CDs, and DVDs (no VHS or cassettes please) can be deposited at the Friends Desk in the Library lobby any time that the Library is open. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law and donors can request a tax receipt at the Library help desk. The money FOTLL raises through the book sales is donated to the Livingston Library to support programming and supplement book acquisitions.
