LIVINGSTON, NJ – The 2014 Lancer Boys Volleyball team got back their winning ways by beating No. 20 Hunterdon Central in two straight games. The Lancers, currently ranked 18th by the Star-Ledger, played one of their best matches of the year, winning in straight games—25-10 and 25-14. Livingston won both games handily, and raised their record for the season to 8-3.

Mike Cheng, senior outside hitter, led the Lancers with nine kills. Mike has really turned into the go-to man for Livingston this year—averaging around 10 kills per match. Mike also chipped in with two service aces. David Shulman, Livingston’s senior setter, ran an effective set, getting many hitters involved.  Senior opposite hitter Jay Schaefer and junior outside hitter Jason Levine each chipped in with four kills. Schaefer’s serve was effective all day, tallying a team high five aces. Senior middle hitter Tom Montesion added three kills to help the Lancer cause.

In addition, all of the starters stepped up their defense, with Kevin Cheng and Jack Rulka leading the way. Hitters Mike Cheng, Levine, and Schaefer also provided nice passes to make the setter’s job easier.

Coach Al Partelow stated, “The team played well today after a long day last Saturday [Livingston went 1-2 in a quad match]. We showed our toughness. Our serving and our serve-receive were better than normal. Today, it was how it should be.”

The Lancers has a key week coming up in their season. On Tuesday, Livingston will visit Newark East Side,  on Thursday, the Lancers will host Belleville in a key conference matchup and on Friday, #2 Bridgewater-Raritan will travel to Livingston in a stern test for the Lancers.

In addition, one of the highlights of the Lancer season will arrive on Saturday, April 26, when Livingston hosts the Lancer Invitational. The tournament starts at 9:00 a.m. and will take place in both the Fitness and Wellness Center and in the Aux. Gym. The tournament should last until the later hours of the afternoon.

Coach Bob Cece said, “There will be 20 teams at the one-day event, of which 10 teams are ranked in the state Top 20.“

Let the Games Begin

I am truly awed by the Olympics.  Watching these superb young athletes on TV inspires me to renew my membership to the gym and pursue my lifelong dream of taking home the gold.

The problem is that in my deluded head, I can see actually see myself standing atop the podium.  I am wrapped in a puffy designer ski coat with a huge piece of bling slung around my neck ...
