MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The Livingston Lancers traveled to Montclair trying to add on to their new win streak, which was started last Saturday against Verona. Although the Lancers were away, they instantly got ahead early in the game and never looked back, defeating Montclair, 5-1, in a game that showed everyone how much depth the Lancers have.

With a little over a minute underway, Josh Delseni was able to add the first goal of the game, on a shot that was rebounded right to his stick. Later in the period, on a powerplay, Cameron Friedfertig, while inching in from the point, rifled a goal passed the Montclair goalie, Hannah Synnott, to go out in front by two goals.

In the second period, it was more of the same, as Adam Lanel sneaked a goal through as he jabbed the puck by the net for the Lancers' second powerplay of the game.

"I was right behind the net," the assistent captain Lanel said. "I got a rebound and was able to put it in."

However, with 24.8 seconds remaining in the second period, Montclair's Conor Brand scored the first goal for Montclair, while getting pushed into Livingston's goalie Brian Lilien. The score was 3-1 at the second intermission.

In the final period, Tal Finberg and David Reiter each added a goal, while the Lancers' penalty kill unit went to work stopping Montclair's attack on all three penalties, including a five-on-three.

The kill shut Montclair down on all four opportunities in the game. On the other end, when Livingston was given the powerplay, they converted on three of their four opportunities on the night.

"We move the puck around pretty well on the powerplay," forward Seth Crockett said. "We're always screening the goalie and crashing the net."

Not only did the Lancers crash the net on offense, defenseman Cole Friedfertig saved a goal late in the third period, while behind his goalie Brian Lilien, literally inside the net. The puck was on the line, and Cole shovled it away before Montclair was able to get a stick on it. Cole played offense and defense as the Lancers were shorthanded. But not only that, Friedfertig made a save by the net as well.

"I just wanted to help my team every way possible," junior Cole Friedfertig said.

Despite being shorthanded, the Lancers really proved how much depth they have on this team.

"I said this all year, if we were going to have a successful season, we were going to need depth," the captain Ben Arden said. "I'm confident when they're put on the ice they will make things happen."

When the Lancers get out to an early lead, it gives them great momentum to begin the game. In most wins during the season, the Lancers have got ahead within the first five minutes of the game. This time, the momentum stayed on the Lancers' side for most of the game, allowing five different Lancers to score a goal against Montclair.

"Hockey is a huge momentum game," goalie Brian Lilien said after saving 28 of 29 shots against Montclair. "We dominated the first period from that."

The Lancers will now look to get a few goals early, on Friday against the state's No. 15 Nutley. They've tied them in the first meeting, however the second meeting saw Nutley steal a win. This will be the final time for the Lancers to prove they belong in the rankings with Nutley.

"Friday is going to be a huge game for us," Crockett said. "It will be a huge game for the seeding in our conference. We feel like we can beat them (Nutley) and were going to come out ready to go."

Don’t Complain; Vote!

It’s no secret that people have strong feelings about what’s happening in our country. It’s also true that much of politics is local. In November, 11th District residents will have the opportunity to choose a new congressional representative who will not only serve as a critical check on the federal level, but also determine how our distract fares ...

Cluelessly Clueless

I teenaged my way through high school under the assumption that my parents had no idea what I was doing.  I like to think I was pretty good at withholding information and presenting situations in ways that were other than they really were.

Still, sometimes they found things out.  Like the time my friends plopped me on our front door step at one o'clock in the morning ...
