LIVINGSTON, NJ - Heritage Middle School students are performing their version of the famous Broadway play "Guys and Dolls" this weekend under the direction of Christopher Russoniello and musical director Christopher Hutter. The remaining show is from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. today. Tickets are $7.00 at the door.

The stage is set in New York City in the time of gangsters and gamblers. Two separate tales of romance are played out with words, song and dance by 30 actors in period costumes. The lead roles are Nathan Detroit (AJ Keenan) who runs "the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York," while his fiancee, the nightclub "Hot Box" dancer Miss Adelaide (Samantha Kahn) waits for the day they will finally get married, and a gambler named Sky Masterson (Benjamin Asher) who has an up and down love affair with a missionary named Sarah Brown (Shari Bernbach). The actors deliver strong renditions of well-known songs as “Luck Be a Lady" and “I'll Know.”

At Friday’s production, Principal Patricia Boland stated, "The kids have worked really hard— they're so excited. I love to see kids from all different grade levels working together that usually are in different circles. I'm so thrilled to see lines of children waiting to get in to see the show!"

Director/Choreographer Chris Russoniello opened the show with a short speech citing, "These kids are amazing, but you already know that. We go through a growing process the week of the show. Thank you to the parents for letting you [the students] come here for two months. Thank you for letting me work with your kids."

He also told the audience he was "very happy to have so many students from last year" sitting in the crowd.

Parent Stacey Lodge said, "The casting of couples is great! These kids can really sing!"

Attendee Kelly Eagan said, "No petty criminals in this show, only first-class acting by all the ‘guys and dolls’ at Heritage Middle School.”

Eigth grade teacher Maureen Biss, who attended with her daughter, said "Guys and Dolls is a wonderful way to display the talents of the great kids at Heritage. Their enthusiasm and comic delivery of a classical musical makes for an enjoyable evening!"

The cast includes: AJ Keenan, Alexa Malone, Alexander DeFilippo, Ally Beetle, Andrew Jones, Anushka Agarwal, Rebecca Fernandes, Benjamin Asher, Caitlin Danton, Carolina Lima, Charlotte Simon, Andie Weiser-Schlesinger, Cheyenne DeRosa, Erin Eagen, Hannah Jarma, Joe Lanigan, Josh Meyers, Julia Cuppari, Lauren Hirschmann, Lily Herbig, Michael Koerwer, Mikayla Grubb, Nick Meany, Rhianna Bhatia, Samantha Kahn, and Shari Bernbach.

Philip Roth's Childhood Home Still Stands in Newark

May 26, 2018

NEWARK, NJ — The house at 81 Summit Avenue in Newark's Weequahic neighborhood is otherwise unremarkable expect for a sign attached to its faux flagstone facade noting that the home has been designated a historic site—the childhood home of celebrated author Philip Roth, who died Tuesday at the age of 85.

There were no crowds outside the home to pay homage to ...

A Royal Pain

I went to a big wedding over the weekend.  It was in England.

I like to think I was invited, but according to the Royal Guards and the Thames Valley Police I was not.  But more about that later.

You see, not too long ago I received an evite addressed to me from H&M@royalwedbot.co.uk.  Curiously, it was in my spam folder with a warning message. For an evite it was pretty ...
