Orthopedics Unlimited/Michael Rieber, MD, FACS, Now Offering iovera° Treatment for Chronic Knee Pain and Pain Management After Surgery

LIVINGSTON, NJ – Dr. Michael Rieber, MD, of Orthopedics Unlimited, announced this week that he is now offering the iovera° treatment, an innovative approach to blocking pain, as part of the Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) standard of care.

The iovera° treatment uses the body’s natural response to cold to immediately relieve pain without the use of drugs or other systemic therapies, he said. Performed prior to Total Knee surgery, according to Rieber, the iovera° treatment reduces pain in the critical weeks following surgery.

“We are extremely sensitive to our patients’ recovery process following total knee surgery,” he said. “The iovera° treatment has really paved the way for an incredibly smooth recovery process for our patients.”

Clinical results comparing 24 patients who were treated with iovera° five days prior to TKA surgery to 24 patients who were not have shown that the iovera°-treated group:

  • requested less opioids than the control group, while reporting similar function and pain scores;
  • experienced less stiffness at six and 12 weeks post surgery; and
  • experienced less knee pain at six and 12 weeks post surgery.

The iovera° treatment is based upon the well-established science of cryotherapy. Using the power of cold, the iovera° system precisely cools peripheral nerve tissue to immediately block the nerve from sending pain signals.

According to Rieber, the system is specifically designed to create a temporary, reversible nerve block through a process called Wallerian degeneration (second degree) that is followed by predictable reinnervation, or re-growth.

At Orthopedics Unlimited, Rieber and his team of skilled health professionals are dedicated to providing the best standard of care. The iovera° system has been studied in clinical trials and is FDA cleared to block pain in peripheral nerves.
